Sandworm

Sandworm: A New Error of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin’s Most Dangerous Hackers by Andy Greenberg

If you think that a career in cybersecurity might be for you consider picking up a copy of Sandworm by Andy Greenberg. It is an infinitely readable narrative non-fiction book that touches on the history of cyber attacks and how we progressed to the state of affairs we currently reside in. You will learn about the first ever cyber attack and its origins, how the emergence of Stuxent reframed the dangers of cyber warfare and made us reconsider the damage a few lines of code can cause. The core of the story focuses on identifying the members of the hacker collective often called Sandworm. Who eventually launched the 2017 cyberattack known as NotPetya, that was started in Ukraine, shutting down trains and hospitals, but soon spread globally wreaking havoc and costing an estimated $10 Billion in damage.

You will also meet an impressive cast of characters, from professors to hackers to industry leaders who will walk you through the current state of the industry and what the future may look like and how the United States is particularly vulnerable. While not completely up to date, as the book was published in 2019, it is an excellent novel to read for anyone regardless of cybersecurity experience.

Team Recommendation: Must Read!
